RANDOM.....when fire becomes an ocean

Now…
Out of sheer randomness, Antu would like to talk about

Oceans Of Fire

“We butchered ‘chan-mali-chan’, and it becomes belacan”
– Kelvyn Yeang, on the in-take of a Malay traditional song.

Oceans of Fire are a quartet set to put music on fire, from the tempo of Jazz, to the beat of metal music. Their creativity in songs seems limitless. Having fun and putting all tunes mash-up together. This rising band hopes to ascend and put new colors in our air waves.

The band member consist of Kelvyn Yeang, band leader and lead guitar

Chiat on rhythm guitar

Jonathan Chen on bass

and their drummer, Jonathan Scully

They are no stranger to Penang music scene, as they have been actively participating in Penang Jazz Festival and the winner Malaysia Northern Region Yamaha Asian Beat Finals in 2006.
“We cannot sing, so we play instruments. We are an instrumental band.”
When ask to describe about their music, the word ‘eclectic’ would come to mind. No denying it, as each one of them comes from different music locale. Kelvyn is from a rock background, working professionally in projects and teaching guitars. His good friend, Chiat, is also the co-founder of Ocean of Fire (OoF), jamming together since their high school years. Scully, their drummer, is also teaching drum professionally, loving jazz and rock, and anything in between. The bassist Chen is classically trained. He plays the violin, piano and drums.
“We are not trying to compete, we are just offering a different sound of music”--answered Kelvyn when asked on what OoF focused on.

I couldn't agree more. For the plain passion of music, this band had been performing endlessly, sharing their views and offering new types of music each time. Recently, the band had just release their album called ‘Destination’. During their recent performance, Kelvyn gave an in-take of every song and its history. Example the song ‘Run Run Run’ was created after hearing their friend had been chased by a man-eating goose, ‘Papadam from China’ was created when they eat papadams sold RM1 at a mamak stall and the song ‘I Found You’ was produced by Kelvyn, for his wedding proposal on the day of the band’s album launch.

I got to catch them perform live at NBT and asked a few questions:

Describe the music of Ocean of Fire and what does OoF have to offer to music lovers.
We are a little bit of everything. Our music is different as we are experimenting and exploring different tunes every time. Its vast music: OoF is offering listeners and music lovers an alternative music to listen to. As music is an expression of emotions and feelings for us, we deliver it by playing it.

OoF is Penang-based band. In your opinion, what’s the difference in Penang’s music scene and KLs?
Penang Island is small. The music scene there is ‘warm’, as in, people know each other. It’s cozy as everybody would acknowledge and know who’s who and what’s what. Here in KL, as we know, it’s a big city, with lots of talents, variety, and countless of musicians; thus knowing contacts and fellow music friends is quite a challenge.

If OoF can change one thing in our music local scene, what would it be?
Actually, there are many things that we would love to change, but if it’s to choose only one, it would be, as we all know, for the media to play more of our local music scene. It would be great to hear our song to be played in the air waves and to be seen in the media. There are many talents out there, and media should take an extra bit of effort to showcase them. It’s a good platform for bands like us to deliver what we have to offer.

What is Oof in-take and opinions on music itself?
Music is an expression of a person’s view. Either if it’s on life, love or anything. Thus, I believe that Music cannot be a culture by itself. A little bit too much of one kind of music, in our opinion, will effect a lot in one’s life. We believe that variety in music is good and the explorations of sound are limitless, it creates new waves each time.

Where do you see OoF in 5 years to come?
Reaching out to more and more music listeners; having variety of music listeners who listens to our songs. That would be great as we want to reach every corner of the earth, bringing music to their ears and passion in doing so.

Any quotation that OoF would like to point out?
“Music is a powerful tool”, it delivers one’s mind, opinions and views. Abusing it would be a shame, thus, a musician must know their responsibility in delivering positive message across to their listeners. As we said, music can affects one’s life, so delivering a ‘healthy’ music is a musician’s responsibility.

And that night, was a awesome night indeed

From the pictures, need I to say more?

Hhmmm...

Fruit for thought:
1-we have many talented local acts
2-we have internet
3-we have our ear

Then whats stopping you (yes you) from exploring and supporting our local music scene?

If its not you, who else?

RANDOM....pure legal drugs

Now…
Out of sheer randomness, Antu would like to talk about

CAFFEINE

When the word caffeine is mention, 90% of us will think about coffee

Yes, I must admit. I am a coffee addict. But then again, it wasn’t the coffee, but I think, it’s the caffeine. As I can live without my coffee for a few days, only to be replace by my tea.

Growing up in my family, my parents never failed to have coffee for breakfast, after lunch and dinner. Every night, my granma would drink her coffee and watch the tele until late nite, without fail. It becomes a custom in my family, that we have teatime after Asar, drinking black tea together with goreng pisang or some other kuih-muih. Yes, I grew up in a family of caffeine’ness; either its coffee, or tea.

“Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid”

Caffeine can also be found in certain fruits, soft drinks, energy drinks and in a small amount in chocolate.

A fact that you might not know:
‘Caffeine is the world's most widely consumed psychoactive substance, but, unlike many other psychoactive substances, it is legal and unregulated in nearly all jurisdictions’- Wikipedia.com

In antu’s mind “yeaahhhhhh….legal drugggssss babbeyyyyyy…..”

-_-"

Thus, antu would like to share the pros and cons of caffeine; as it’s good to know these facts that might help you, and also effects you.

*bare in mind that these effects might be differs to you, as each of us has individual body effects on caffeine*

The key is quantity and quality

So, below are some random effects of what caffeine can do to you:

1.Caffeine can elevate heart rate, increase blood flow, and raise body temperature. (I like to drink my coffee during cold times…in my case, when it’s raining and if I’m under Malaysian air-cond)

2.It increases blood sugar levels and acts as a diuretic, meaning you urinate more frequently and reduce water intake. (going to the toilet to wee-wee more eh?)

3.Small amounts of caffeine taken daily, for example a cup of coffee a day; can create physical dependence on caffeine. If you fail to drink your daily dose of caffeine, you can end up with headaches, excessive sleepiness, a feeling like you can’t function or flu like symptoms. (hmmm…very familiar symptoms in my case)

4.Caffeine has its ability to disrupt sleep cycles, causing less deep sleep (freddy wouldn’t like this, for sure)

5.Caffeine increases intellectual activity when fatigued or bored. (I wish I can have it during my classes in high school)

6.Caffeine interferes with adenosine, a brain chemical that normally has a calming effect. (drink one before you meditate in yoga class….i’m sure you’ll be the least student that the yoga instructor prefers)

7.Caffeine may reduce the incidence of kidney stones by increasing the flow of urine and decreasing its concentration (like I said, wee-wee more maaahhh)

8.Caffeine may aggravate osteoporosis by leaching calcium from the bones. (I wonder what will happen if I drink my coffee together with anlene…hhmmm…)

9.Caffeine aggravates stress in people who drink it every day. (to my kids/partners:all my years in starbucks as an sm, I blame the caffine…wink-wink)

10.Caffeine dilates the arteries of the brain and may counter migraines. Caffeine is also a cause of migraines. (so I dunno which one is which in my case -_-“)

Now….over dosage of caffeine may cause you:

•Visual: seeing flashes
•Heart: rapid and irregular heartbeat.
•Ears: ringing
•Skin: more sensitive to touch or pain
•Muscle: twitching and trembling
•Brain (central): confusion, headache, delirium and anxiety

In other words…when over dosage of caffeine, you may look like this:

The thing that inspired me to write this post about caffeine is because of today’s incident. Whereby I wasted 20mins of my life stuck inside the toilet.

It was cold in my office (as usual) – I was sleepy - had my coffee – sipping it slowly – felt energize a bit – few mins later – wanted to wee-wee so badly – rush to the toilet – lock the door – broke the lock – stuck inside.

One: I waited for someone to at least come to the rescue (but nooo...miracles didn’t happen for me)
Two: I felt that the reason I was ‘kuat’ enough to accidently broke it was because I need to wee-wee so badly, and I have the ‘strength’ out of my coffee.
Three: I got out MacGyver style, by using my belt and some toilet tissue (wow….)

-_-"

hmmmm...not bad for being a caffeine junkie eh?

Coffee anybody?

RANDOM....joker of the year

Now…
Out of sheer randomness, Antu would like to talk about

JOKES & JOKERS

Antu remember the time when she lepak makan with her friends; the three jokers, and our table becomes the most ‘vocal-laugh’ table (period….)
-_-"

“Yo' Mama is so fat, when she went skydiving, she caused an eclipse”

-_-"

So, Antu browse through the internet, and got some pretty funny jokes. Thus, antu would like to share her 'homework', with you guys:

Blonde and Brunette, Falling
A blonde and a brunette both jump off a cliff at the same time. Which one will hit the bottom first?
The brunette, because the blonde has to ask for directions.

Yo' Mama Is So
Yo' Mama is so old, when I told her to act her age, she died.

Yo' Mama Is So
Yo' Mama is so stupid, she put a ruler next to her bed to see how long she sleeps.

Money Vows
During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approached the pastor with an unusual offer:

"Look, I'll give you $100 if you'll change the wedding vows. When you get to the part where I'm supposed to promise to 'love, honor and obey' and 'be faithful to her forever,' I'd appreciate it if you'd just leave that out."

He passed the minister a $100 bill and walked away satisfied.

On the day of the wedding, when it came time for the groom's vows, the pastor looked the young man in the eye and said: "Will you promise to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life, and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?"

The groom gulped and looked around, and said in a tiny voice, "Yes," then leaned toward the pastor and hissed: "I thought we had a deal."

The pastor put a $100 bill into the groom's hand and whispered: "She made me a better offer."

Spaghetti
A wealthy man was having an affair with an Italian woman for a few years.

One night, during one of their rendezvous, she confided in him that she was pregnant.

Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he paid her a large sum of money if she would go to Italy to have the child. If she stayed in Italy,
he would also provide child support until the child turned 18.

She agreed, but wondered how he would know when the baby was born. To keep it discrete, he told her to mail him a post card, and write "Spaghetti" on the back. He would then arrange for child support.

One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife.

"Honey," she said, "you received a very strange post card today."

"Oh, just give it to me and I'll explain it later," he said.

The wife obeyed, and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and fainted.

On the card was written "Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti. Two with meatballs, one without."

A joke is a short story or ironic depiction of a situation communicated with the intent of being humorous. -wikipedia on jokes

but after looking at this pictures,
Antu truly thinks this guy's is the king of all jokers

RANDOM.....a 'giler-mahal-siot' house

Now…
Out of sheer randomness, Antu would like to talk about

ANTILLA

This is the house of Mr. Mukesh Ambani, india’s richest man, the fifth, in the world.

This is the most expensive house ever built.

This is the biggest house ever built.

To make things short, antu will list down certain features of this ‘house’:

1. The shape is based on Vaastu, an Indian tradition much like Feng Shui that is said to move energy beneficially through the building by strategically placing materials, rooms and objects. (a large energizer bateri lo)

2. no two floors are alike in either plans or materials used (repetition is not welcome)

3. six stories of parking lots. (Muat utk kapal selam sekali)

4. lobby with nine elevators (kalah airport nye lobby)

5. large ballroom with 80% of its ceiling covered in crystal chandeliers (final destination anybody?)

6. There is a "entourage room" for security guards and assistants to relax (keja jadi pak guard pun tak pe)

7. A yoga and dance studio (gojet lambak tu babe)

8. It has an ice room, where residents and guests can escape the Mumbai heat to a small, cooled chamber dusted by man-made snow flurries. (if its in Malaysia, it’s called ‘mines wonderland’)

9. An open-air atrium of gardens, flowers and lawns (jadi tukang kebun pun, ok gak)

10. It has a two-storey health club (kalau tak sihat lagi, aku tak tahu nak habaq ape)

11. A theater that will fit in about 44 people. “The theater is more like those seen in George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch’ -Forbes.com(watdafak….)

12. It has a lap pool.(A pool that you can do laps & laps in -_-")

These are the least features that the Antilla has.
Danggg...

Antilla was named after a mythical island.
Antillia (or Antilia) is a legendary island which was reputed during the age of exploration to lie in the Atlantic Ocean far to the west of Portugal and Spain. – wikipedia.

Now...

Antu’s version of ‘Antilla’ is

any kinda house, full of laughter, a big happy family, together with a house pet
(i would like a platypus for my family's pet)
Family guy anybody?

Home sweet home…

RANDOM.....for the love of cocoa

Now…
Out of sheer randomness, Antu would like to talk about

Fair-trade CHO-KO-LAT (chocolate, to be exact)

We should thank the Mesoamericans for creating such drink from the seed of Theobroma cacao trees; later the findings by a Spanish conquest. And then, in 1847 to Joseph Fry & Son, in discovery of a mixture which resulted to the first modern chocolate bar.

We, Malaysian, have yet to learn (even to know) about fair-trade.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. – fairtrade.com

Cocoa farmers

Cocoa farmers are some of the poorest people in the world and many of them earn on average about £50(RM350) a year.

They depend on selling their beans to pay for the essential things in life including wellington boots to protect their feet from the scorpions that live among the cocoa trees.

However many farmers don't make enough money from selling their beans and can't afford food, medicine, clean water or school for their children.

Hmmm….sad isn’t it?

Even in the 16th century, Spanish armies began enslaving Mesoamericans to produce cacao.

I, myself, have been trying to be considerate enough to think about what is my responsibility as a consumer. I admit, it’s only for certain moments only, but having a little thought, is better than having none.

My opinion – me, as a consumer, having the dilemma of buying fair-trade things is not danggg cheap, consider the fact that it can be found in cold storage, starbucks, mark & spencer etc. (not a place where you consider cheap for a middle-wage person like me)

But, certain occasions, I’ll buy it as I will have the thought that at least ‘I contributed’, and not ‘tahu, tapi buat bodoh’.
And you, yes you, jgn makan je cho-ko-lat tu, having thoughts can automatic make you consider it. Thats good enough for a start.

And for the love of cho-ko-lat, we must build a happier world, aight?

If its not you, who else?

RANDOM.....to kill, or not to 'kill'

Now…
Out of sheer randomness, Antu would like to talk about

SERIAL KILLER

A serial killer is a person who murders three or more people over a period of more than thirty days, with a "cooling off" period between each murder, and whose motivation for killing is largely based on psychological gratification. Often, a sexual element is involved with the killings. The murders may have been attempted or completed in a similar fashion and the victims may have had something in common; for example, occupation, race, appearance, sex, or age group.
–copied ‘bulat-bulat’ from wikipedia

(When I was a kid, I often taught that serial killer, is a ‘cereal’ killer - pembunuh bijiran)
-_-"

Anyways, nowadays, me and my sis, we like to watch ‘criminal minds’. Before that was ‘mentalist’. Now is the era of ‘psycho’ for us. (Before that, was the era of doctors; watching greys anatomy, house. And there was also an era of forensics: csi and other lots. And many more eras, believe me)

I, myself, like to watch this sort of things is because it’s fascinating to know how a mind can go ‘co-co’ and start killing people. I like to know the factors that trigger and contribute the person to become psycho, and end up being a killer themselves.

TED BUNDY

Just when u thought what happens in the movies are just make believe. Ted Bundy is one of many serial killers (I believe) is an inspiration to certain movies and episodes out there.

The most frightening of serial killers: a handsome, educated psychopathic law student who stalked and murdered.
-trutv.com intake on Ted Bundy

You can google him out and read more about him

Normally, people would like to know more on his killings and his victims. However, Antu would like to focus on his early, and after killings.

As a kid:

You see, at jr high, he get bullied and push around. Ted found out that his ‘so called’ sister (who he grew up with) was his mother, and his ‘parents’ was actually his grandparents. He had a step dad, a loving one; however Ted has always been uncomfortable with his step dad. He was also very ‘tight’ to himself, a bit hard to socialize.

High School:

Despite that, he is a high grade average student throughout high school and college. In High school, he was famous for being well dressed and exceptionally well mannered. He seldom dates back then, as his interest was into skiing and politics.

And they say ‘college is where u make ur future':

Ted was also a good grader in college. But his focused had changed when he meets the girl of his dreams. His 1st love; a beautiful and highly sophisticated woman from a wealthy Californian family. He never knew a girl like her ‘class’ would go for a man like him.
Romance grew as they went skiing together. However, the girl didn’t felt the ‘love’ as much as Ted does. She felt that Ted didn’t have any specific goals in life. Ted did everything to win and sustain her heart. Even won a summer scholarship to the prestigious Stanford University in California. But the girl broke-up the relationship after graduating college, only to say he was not the ‘husband material’.

Ted never really recovered from the break-up. But still, both wrote letters to each other, although the girl indicates that there’s no way they’re getting back together. Little that she knew, the guy that she once loved, was evolving; into a man who she had wished she’s never meet. Ted had become obsessive over her.

Obsessive enough; to make him drop-out of college.

Revolution of a broken heart:

He changed from a shy and introverted person to a more focused and dominant character. He was driven, as if to prove himself to the world.
He re-enrolled at the University of Washington and studied psychology, a subject in which he excelled. Bundy became an honors student and was well liked by his professors at the university.

And then came along Elizabeth; a divorcee with one daughter. She viewed Ted as the father figure for her child, and that one day, she’ll get married to him. However, it was too late for Ted, his feelings towards Elizabeth was just ‘average’ love. The new Ted was different. They dated for 5 years and she kept hope of having a family with him. Little that she knew, the ‘new’ Ted was seeing his Californian ex again.

Having business trips to California, the ‘confident and mature’ Ted won the heart of his ex again. She was deceived by his charismatic skills, and not knowing about his other steady girlfriend, Elizabeth. Both; Ted and the Californian girl had romance during the fall and winter.

Subject marriages was brought up by the Californian girl, but only to find the ‘Ted’ she knew, radically had changed. He had become cold and despondent. And Ted ended all contact with her.

Revenge: he rejected her, as once she did to him.

And then, the horror movie starts:

The 1st : Lynda Ann, a beautiful ski announcer
The Last: Kimberly Leach, a twelve year old girl.

All victims’ shares similarity: all the girls were white, slender, single, wearing slacks at the time of disappearance, had hair that was long and parted in the middle and they all disappeared in the evening.

‘clever-clever squirrel jump, finally drop to the ground also’

-_-"
sepandai-pandai tupai melompat, akhirnya jatuh ke tanah jua

He was caught, jailed.
Escape.
Caught again.
And yes, manage to escape again.
And then, he was caught again

Mr Bundy was sentences to death on electric chair.
Crowd cheered and fireworks light up the air.

Hmm….
And ending to a nightmare, I guess.

The thing is, what really caught my heart was this
“February 9th marked the second anniversary of Kimberly Leach's death. It also was the day that the sentencing trial commenced. During the penalty phase of the trial, Ted shocked those in the courtroom while he interviewed defense witness Carole Ann Boone. During his questioning of Carole, the two caught everyone off guard when they exchanged vows. According to Florida law, the verbal promise made under oath was enough to seal the agreement and the two were considered officially married. Shortly thereafter, the groom was sentenced to death in the electric chair for the third time in under a year. He would spend his honeymoon alone on Death Row in Florida State's Raiford Penitentiary.” –trutv.com

Hmmm...sad isnt it?

Love is the beginning of life; it will also be the end
And my sad beginning, will be your perfect ending
– Antu Mokhtar for Mr Bundy

RANDOM.....a day for all mothers

Now…
Out of sheer randomness, Antu would like to talk about

MAMA

Mama is a woman who has, conceived, given birth to, and raised a child Because of the complexity and differences of a mothers' social, cultural, and religious definitions and roles, it is challenging to define a mother to suit a universally accepted definition.

As mother’s day would be arriving soon, most of us will think of what present to buy, going back to hometown to visit mom, arranging family dinner or outing and so on.
Me….being my mom’s ‘least favorite’ daughter, will make time to go back, sleep on the couch, and just say ‘happy mother’s day’ to my granma. Yes…to my granma.

But then again…I still buy my mom something she likes.

You see, me and my mom, we don’t go to the same page.

She thinks being a witch is cool, I think having ‘gift’ is like a curse
She thinks the guy’s cute, I think the guy’s just like to put make-up on
She thinks money is everything; I think we still need money, and a lil bit of honey
In other words she never views things my way, and neither do I.

Why?

Let’s just say, a series of life drama episode makes us what we are today

Now…below, is the list of HATE facts that I just couldn’t tell my mom straight (so I write it in this blog):

1. I hate the way you treated papa; he was a nice guy, but you didn’t see it when he was alive, and when u did, it was just too late. I guess it’s true what they say ‘manusia akan menghargai selepas kehilanganya’
2. I hate it when you view things only for a short period of time, and never the long run; the effects and responsibility.
3. I hate when you judge people by its appearance.
4. I hate it when you don’t ask for opinions and make decisions on their behalf; never ask permission.
5. I hate when you dunt have anybody to bug, you find things and everything to bug, still.
6. I hate it when you can’t find solutions, u start screaming at others (because of your temper)
7. I hate it when you spend money a lot, and when things need the most, you regret spending it all.
8. I hate it when you like to be busy-body and go through my stuff. Those things are place neatly inside boxes, you dun have to take them out and do nothing afterwards; there’s a reason why it was in the box in the 1st place.
9. I hate it when you are too obsessed with ‘gifts’ that you should not tamper in the 1st place.
10. I hate the way you still view me as a ‘stupid, useless’ person (until now) although I have prove myself worthy in so many, many ways.

And now…below, is the list of facts that I wish to express to my mom, but because of my big EGO,I cant (so I just write it in this blog):

1. I notice you would sneak in, to check up on ur son and daughters. And watched us sleep,or just ‘usap’ our forehead, or ‘selimutkan’ us, until now.
2. I notice if we say we’re coming back, u would ‘bentang tempat tidur’ or ‘buat makan malam’.
3. I notice you sometimes want to talk to me, or join ur children’s conversation, but its kinda hard cos you can’t fit in at some point.
4. I notice if I ask or want something (although I dunt), you try to fulfill my needs (example:kelisa)
5. I notice you try very hard on trying to talk and express your sadness to me, on the phone, but all you get is ‘ maa…I’m busy right now…nanti syasya call balik’
6. I notice it saddens you a lot (but you express it by showing anger) when your kids just think that your opinions are irrelevant and ridiculous.
7. I notice you try to ask your children to come back, but it seems that ur children only want to come back when there’s something (sorry, really…sorry)
8. I notice you try to know the latest trends and news so we have a topic to talk about.
9. I notice you’re actually a fragile person (although you try to act all ‘aku org besi’ thing)
10. I notice you hate me cause I was close to papa and know so many things about him during his last day, and that saddens u because u wish you were together with us during that period.

And I notice that no matter how horrible our relationship can be, at the end of the day, we puke it out and make the best out of it.

Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

RANDOM.....mind your english

Now…
Out of sheer randomness, Antu would like to talk about

‘MAT SALLEH’ LANGUAGE

Antu got scolded by her boss today, due to an email she sent using the word ‘conformation’, when its suppose to be spelled as ‘confirmation’

-_-" Grammar and spelling needs to be polish again. Thus, Antu, with determination, WILL READ MORE TO ENHANCE HER ENGLIGH, HAHAHA <---sinister laugh, and national anthem playing at the back
-_-"

Antu is the sort of person who likes to alter ‘Mat Saleh’ language, into a common word. Example:

Confirm – KOMPOM
Driver – DREBAR
Biscuit – BISKUT
Boyfriend – BOI-PREN
Reverse – GOS-TAN (well maybe not, this one)

And so on….

Therefore, as professional working person that I ought to be, I really need to start picking-up my ‘Mat Saleh’ language skills (like serious)
Browsing through the net, looking for stuff to read, I just had to make turns, from my ‘serious want to learn English browsing, to the ‘play-play wrong English’ side (Plus stupid random pictures)

And here are the results:
